Inoue Butudan

‘Chanto’ products are manufactured by the Inoue Butudan Company . This enterprise is located in the city of Hikone Shiga in Japan. Hikone has a history of over 300 years as a production centre of Buddhist altars.

Two different crafts i.e. lacquer- and woodworking are the basis of the Chanto-products. For the manufacture of one Chanto product both kinds of craftsmen are needed, each with their own specialisation. These professionals trained for 5 to 7 years. The result is delicate handwork done in highest precision. The woodwork and lacquer work technique were originally applied to the hilt of Samurai swords. The crafts survive and continue to develop thanks to the design of the contemporary Chanto products.
